By the time I'd clambered back up from the vantage point overlooking the Devil's Soap Dish, there wasn't long before the race winner came charging up the final hill and raced to the finish. From then on there was a steady stream of runners reaching the crest of the hill and crossing the finish line as fast as they could, with whatever strength remained in their legs for the final few yards.
